SUMMARY:Pre-Halloween For Coleman Highlands Kiddos
DESCRIPTION:Pre-Halloween was started last year during COVID-19 lockdown as a way for our neighborhood children to enjoy trick-or-treating with smaller crowds and at a safe distance from others. It was held the day before Halloween and was a big success. So many families enjoyed it that many neighbors wanted to do it again this year. Download the map of participating houses. \nPre-Halloween is NOT a replacement for Halloween night. It can be an alternative or it can be IN ADDITION to regular Halloween. However you want to celebrate is entirely up to you. For some\, this means double Halloween fun — trick-or-treating or handing out candy BOTH nights. For others\, it means they can choose between whichever is more comfortable and/or convenient for them. \nHere are some reasons why many of our neighbors enjoy Pre-Halloween: \n\nSome parents are stuck home handing out candy while their child goes out trick-or-treating – often one parent stays in and the other goes out. Pre-halloween gives the other parent the opportunity to go out and enjoy halloween with their kids (or both parents and then stay home on Halloween night and hand out candy together as a family).\nSome people aren’t home on Halloween to hand out candy. Doing a pre-halloween gives them the opportunity to experience the fun of participating in the trick-or-treat experience.\nColeman Highlands gets pretty swamped with kids on Halloween from all over the city\, so it can be kinda crazy. For those who don’t particularly enjoy crowds\, the pre-Halloween trick-or-treat experience is more relaxing.\nDuring Pre-Halloween\, many people sit out at tables in their front yard instead of inside their homes\, which leads to a lot more neighborly conversation. Especially during the more restrictive period of the pandemic\, it was a very nice reprieve to be able to chit chat with our neighbors. But even when there’s not a pandemic going on\, it is always a pleasure to be able to catch up with neighbors and chat!\n\n

SUMMARY:Meet our KCPD CIO
DESCRIPTION:KCPD’s Community Interaction Officer (CIO) program assigns two officers to each patrol division who work as direct liaisons to the communities they serve. Through extensive engagement efforts\, CIOs build relationships with Kansas Citians to increase community policing through public safety and crime preventions. Officer Charmainne Sanders stepped up to become a Central Patrol CIO when our former CIO\, Holly Sticken\, transferred to the DARE program last year. Officer Sanders knows our area well. She’s a graduate of Lincoln College Prep Academy\, attended University of Central Missouri\, and graduated from the KC Regional Police Academy in 2017. Officer Sanders’ KCPD service has been entirely in the Central Patrol\, where she’s been a responsive and energetic CIO since November. \nCHNA is hosting a “Meet our CIO” event on Thursday May 27th from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. This will be located on the lawn at 3434 West Coleman Road\, home of the Pecina family. Please bring lawn chairs and use appropriate COVID protocols. \nOfficer Sanders will speak and answer questions. If you would like to submit questions in advance\, please email president@colemanhighlands.org or submit your questions to a CHNA board member.

SUMMARY:Easter Egg Hunt
DESCRIPTION:Additional Event Information\nRSVPs have been trickling in over the week to for the Easter Egg Hunt this Saturday\, April 3rd at 3pm. I think we have about 15-20 kiddos showing up so far. We have between 250-300 eggs stuffed with all kinds of exciting toys\, candy\, quarters\, and of course the BIG GRAND PRIZE EGG with goodies and a $10 bill. \nOur neighbor Kelsey Johnson passed along a message to me from the Easter Bunny\, saying that he would be in attendance\, so that’s exciting news! \nAlso I want to thank our neighbors Jeanne Sharkey for donating some extra filled eggs and Jessie Kidwell for coming by last weekend and helping me fill eggs. Our neighbor to the south in Roanoke\, Scott Burnett\, will also be at the egg hunt with some cute polka-dot folding foot stools for any families that would like to take one – so special thanks to him as well for contributing to this event. And thank you to everyone who has offered to help hide eggs and assist with cleanup afterward (hopefully there’s not much cleanup and all the kiddos will find all the eggs!). Also\, Scraps KC was a great resource for this event with boatloads of inexpensive Easter supplies. Please visit Scraps KC if you haven’t already! They are just down the street and are an absolutely amazing resource for crafting and art supplies. \nIf you are still on the fence about whether or not you’ll make it to the egg hunt don’t worry – anyone and everyone in the neighborhood is welcome to show up\, even if you haven’t RSVP’ed. There will be lots of eggs and lots of fun. \nAlthough I will have a few baskets on hand for collecting eggs – please bring your own baskets if you have them. \nSee you all Saturday! \n  \n(P.S. – Here’s a little coloring page I made that you can download\, print\, and color in while you wait for the Easter Bunny to get those eggs hidden! Just right click on the image to download.)

SUMMARY:Luminarias
DESCRIPTION:I’ve always enjoyed this project and loved putting it together with good friends and neighbors. Some years the result has been spectacular. However\, the wind and dry weather conditions of Christmas Eve 2019 were not in our favor. A fire erupted on the south end of the Coleman loop. Residents spent hours in vain trying to light the candles on the Trafficway. Out of precaution\, my brother Jim Baggett and I walked the neighborhood putting out candles in luminarias near cars and those that had been placed in piles of leaves. \nThe cost of doing this project has escalated\, and we should consider some changes. Options range from not placing luminarias and using the funds for other neighborhood activities\, to reducing the locations of luminarias\, to investing in LED lights at a higher cost but reduced risk and environmental impact. The luminaria project has resulted in a beautiful statement from our neighborhood. However\, the thought of this project starting a fire that could result in serious damage removes some of the luster for the evening. \nEditor’s note: George Baggett has graciously spearheaded this customary event for many years. His heart is still in it\, but he’s interested in teaching another Coleman Highlander the details to keep the tradition going forward. Are you interested in leading this tradition? Contact George or a CHNA Board member.

SUMMARY:Pre-Halloween Trick-or-Treat
DESCRIPTION:Due to high numbers of Trick-or-Treaters in the neighborhood\, Coleman Highlands neighbors are putting on a Trick-or-Treating event Friday\, October 30th at 6:00pm for Coleman Highlands kiddos only. \nWe’ve had numbers ranging from 600-800 kids  during Halloween every year—kids from all over the city come to Coleman Highlands. And while it’s wonderful being able to enjoy the fun with so many kids\, large gatherings are not a great idea at this time. Having a special Trick-or-Treat event on the 30th would drop numbers dramatically\, keep large gatherings to a minimum\, and help keep everyone safe. \nParticipating addresses will be listed as we receive them. Please wear a mask and social distance. \nCurrent Participating Addresses\nDownload the final map as a pdf.
