As you plan to repair or remodel your home, remember that Coleman Highlands is listed on the Kansas City Register of Historic Places. Property owners must obtain a Certificate of Appropriateness to ensure that changes or repairs are compatible with the building’s architecture and complement the historic district. Even if your home improvement does not require a building permit, you still are required to get Historic Preservation approval. Examples of exterior alterations include
- Any exterior alterations to your house or garage that are visible from the street or sidewalk
- New trees that would obscure the majority of a home’s façade
- New roof, if changing color or materials
- Demolitions
- Paint color change
- New windows or doors
- A new addition or garage
- A new or replacement fence, gate, or retaining wall
For questions about the extent of review required for your changes, you can call 816-513-2902 to speak with a Preservation officer or email . Hint: Leave a voicemail if no one answers… They’ll call you back.
