Safety Tips

Coleman Highlands is a safe and welcoming neighborhood. In fact, it’s the safest neighborhood in KC’s urban core according to the KCPD’s monthly crime reports (which can be found at kcpolice.org/crime/crime-mapping/). But it’s always worth reminding neighbors to stay vigilant and take proactive steps to keep our community secure.

Home Security Tips

  • Lock doors and windows: Even when you’re home, ensure all entry points are secure.
  • Use outdoor lighting: Motion-sensor lights around doors, garages, and dark corners can deter intruders.
  • Secure valuables: Keep expensive items out of sight from windows.
  • Install security cameras or a doorbell camera: Video surveillance can help prevent crime and provide evidence.
  • Get to know your neighbors: A connected community is a safer one. Report suspicious activity and look out for each other.
  • Consider home safety when going out of town: Get a house sitter or ask a neighbor to take in your mail, turn lights on and off in different parts of the house, and keep an eye on things so the house appears continually occupied.

Vehicle Safety Tips

  • Always lock your car doors: Even in your driveway or in front of your house.
  • Remove valuables: Never leave purses, wallets, electronics, or other items in your car.
  • Park in well-lit areas or in your garage: A locked garage is safest, but bright spots make it harder for thieves to break in unnoticed.
  • Consider a steering wheel lock: This is an extra deterrent, especially for older vehicles.

Report Suspicious Activity

If you see something unusual, don’t hesitate to report it to Kansas City Police Non-Emergency Line at 816-234-5111 (or call 911 for emergencies). You can also share concerns with the Coleman Highlands Neighborhood Association.

By taking a few extra precautions, we can all contribute to keeping Coleman Highlands a safe and secure place to live. Stay alert, stay connected, and stay safe!
