Discover Coleman Highlands’ History Through the Kansas City Public Library’s 1940 Project
Have you ever wondered what your home or a familiar neighborhood spot looked like in the past? The Kansas City Public Library’s 1940 Project offers a unique opportunity for Coleman Highlands residents to uncover and contribute to our community’s history!
The KC 1940 Project is an ambitious effort to digitize and preserve historic tax assessment photos of Kansas City properties from 1940. These images provide a fascinating glimpse into the city’s past, showing how neighborhoods, businesses, and homes have evolved over time.
How You Can Help
Residents are encouraged to browse the project’s catalog at kc1940.org and look up addresses they recognize. If a property hasn’t yet been identified, you can submit its information through the submission form found on each block folder page.
Here’s how it works:
- Visit kc1940.org and search for an address in Coleman Highlands.
- If the property is missing, fill out the submission form on the block’s folder page.
- Library staff will verify the address and create a stub page for the property.
- Once processed, a high-resolution scan of the 1940 building photo will be added to the property page.
Why It Matters
By participating, Coleman Highlands residents can help document neighborhood history for future generations, help preserve historic architecture digitally, and gain a deeper connection to the past while learning how our community has changed.
This is a fantastic way to engage with local history while helping the Kansas City Public Library create a comprehensive visual record of our city’s architectural evolution. Let’s work together to fill in the gaps and ensure that Coleman Highlands’ historic charm is preserved and shared! Start exploring today at kc1940.org!
