A Neighborhood that Plays Together…

Barn RaisingDid you know that we have a Coleman Highlands playgroup that has been meeting regularly for the past 13 years? We also have an active book club. There are groups that get together to run, and those that clean the trails in Roanoke park. One Coleman Highlands mom, Rachel Porter, had a simple idea about sprucing up our playground that has developed into a much larger park renovation plan that is currently underway.

Most recently, a group of neighbors have joined together to form Midtown Change Project through Project Change to support two local charities, Camp Encourage and The Circle. Camp Encourage provides an overnight camp experience here in the greater Kansas City area for youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The Circle, at Lees Summit West High School, was founded by a student and focuses on forming friendships between teens with and without special needs. Both programs strive to create an accepting environment, social experiences, and engaging activities to encourage the social growth and self-esteem of the children and teens they serve.

All around us neighbors are finding ways to connect through shared interests. If your neighborhood group is looking for new members, or, if you are interested in putting together your own special interest group, email the neighborhood google group at and see what other amazing things we can do!
